ABB UNITROL 8000 excitation system
ABB has introduced its next-generation UNITROL® 8000 digital excitation system, a major step forward in reliable and stable power generation. Designed for modern power grids facing surging energy demand and increased renewable integration, UNITROL 8000 delivers enhanced performance, adaptability, and built-in digital intelligence for both hydro and thermal power applications.
A New Era of Grid Stability
As global energy systems evolve, power producers face the dual challenge of meeting growing demand while ensuring grid reliability. UNITROL 8000 provides precise voltage regulation and rapid response to disturbances, helping plants remain online during transient grid events such as short circuits or lightning strikes.
With excitation currents up to 2,000 A, the system serves a broad range of power and industrial applications — from hydroelectric plants to synchronous condensers — offering stable excitation control even under highly dynamic load conditions.
Early Adoption Success in Switzerland
The system has already been successfully deployed by Limmatkraftwerke AG, which operates hydropower plants near Zurich, Switzerland. The company transitioned from its 1980s-era systems to UNITROL 8000 to reduce unplanned outages and improve operational visibility.
“By adopting UNITROL 8000, we have modernized our plants without major reinvestment while improving operational reliability and simplifying day-to-day operations,”
said Michael Kammerlander, Head of Power Plants at Limmatkraftwerke AG.
“ABB’s excitation technology gives us confidence that our assets will continue to perform efficiently for decades to come.”
Digital Intelligence and Modular Design
The UNITROL 8000 integrates advanced data analytics, an embedded digital twin, and cybersecurity-by-design, enabling plant operators to monitor real-time performance and simulate operational scenarios.
Its modular architecture allows easy configuration for site-specific conditions and smooth evolution over time — ensuring future readiness without disrupting ongoing operations. The system supports traditional and modern communication protocols for seamless integration with existing control and automation infrastructures.
Safety, Compliance, and Cybersecurity
UNITROL 8000 complies with IEC 62443 cybersecurity standards and IEC 61439 / 62477-1 safety requirements. It features built-in arc-flash protection, thermal safeguards, and intelligent diagnostics to reduce maintenance risk and downtime.
The system also includes grid code compliance verification, simplifying regulatory approval processes for utilities and power producers.
Supporting the Global Energy Transition
As the International Energy Agency (IEA) emphasizes the need for resilient and flexible power infrastructure, ABB’s UNITROL 8000 stands as a key enabler of grid modernization. By maintaining stable voltage and reactive power under fluctuating renewable input, the system directly contributes to grid resilience and long-term sustainability.
“Adapting power generation to increasingly dynamic grids is one of the defining challenges of the energy transition,”
said Danilo Moresco, Head of Power Reliability at ABB Energy Industries.
“UNITROL 8000 is designed not only for compliance but to actively support grid stability and resilience — today and in the future.”
Part of ABB’s Proven UNITROL Portfolio
UNITROL 8000 extends ABB’s trusted excitation family, which includes the UNITROL 1000 and UNITROL 6000 systems — with more than 30,000 installations worldwide. This next-generation system represents ABB’s continued commitment to reliability, efficiency, and digitalization in power automation.
