Repairing a Broken Wire on the Bently Nevada 89477-30 Proximity Sensor Module

During a field inspection, a Bently Nevada 89477-30 proximity sensor module showed no readings. Upon tracing the issue, I discovered that the signal wire to the sensor had broken. Proper repair requires attention to mechanical, electrical, and signal integrity factors.

The first step is to safely disconnect the module from power. Even though the 3300 NSv system continues running, working on live cables risks damage to the module and safety hazards.

Next, I prepared the broken wire for repair. Stripping back insulation carefully without nicking the conductor is critical for maintaining signal quality. I used shielded coaxial wire repair techniques, since the 89477-30 relies on low-noise analog signals. According to the Bently Nevada 3500 Installation Manual (2020), maintaining proper shielding is essential to avoid interference.

I then soldered the broken ends using a fine-tip soldering iron and heat-shrink tubing to insulate the joint. If possible, I also reinforced the repair with strain relief to prevent future breakage due to vibration or cable movement.

After the physical repair, I tested continuity and signal integrity using a multimeter and a small AC signal generator. The repaired wire showed proper continuity and correct impedance, ensuring the sensor could transmit data accurately to the 3300 monitor.

Finally, I reconnected the sensor module and observed real-time readings on the 3300 NSv console. The proximity readings returned to normal, confirming that careful wire repair restored full functionality without replacing the module.

Field tip: Always maintain shielding and strain relief when repairing proximity sensor wires. Even minor damage can cause erratic readings or false alarms.
