Towards a Net-Zero Future: ABB Electrification Provides “China-Specific” Solutions for Energy Transition

As global energy transition accelerates and China’s new power system enters a critical development phase, how can power equipment companies navigate complex and diverse market challenges?

On October 23, 2025, ABB Switchgear Beijing celebrated its 30th anniversary under the theme “Solid 30, Advancing with the Times”. At this milestone, ABB reaffirmed its commitment to delivering efficient, reliable electrical solutions that support China’s development of smarter and more resilient power systems. During the event, senior executives from ABB’s global and China operations shared insights on future market trends, technological innovations, and strategic positioning in China, highlighting a central theme: in the era of electrification, decarbonization, and digitalization, localized innovation is key to building resilient and intelligent distribution systems to address energy challenges.

30th Anniversary Celebration: Achievements and Green Commitments

The 30th anniversary of ABB Switchgear Beijing was not only a celebration of past accomplishments but also a forward-looking strategic declaration. As a major global manufacturing hub for ABB’s distribution systems, the company has delivered over 1.1 million ring main units over three decades. Its products serve critical sectors from the power grid to renewables and data centers, contributing to major national projects including the South-to-North Water Diversion Project and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

During the event, ABB unveiled two new products: the 24kV Safe Air environmentally friendly gas-insulated ring main unit with compact switchgear, and the 12kV Safe Air gas-insulated load break switch unit. These additions expand ABB’s SF6-free product portfolio and align with China’s new power system goals as well as global green development standards, underscoring ABB’s commitment to China’s sustainable energy future.

ABB Electrification Global President Jiang Peirui stated:
“China is one of ABB’s largest markets and a critical engine for global technological innovation and business growth. ABB Switchgear Beijing exemplifies our long-term commitment: leveraging innovative products and solutions to address pressing energy challenges, create sustainable value, and drive cleaner, more efficient operations toward a net-zero future.”

Global Perspective on Energy Transition: Differences and Common Challenges

During a media session, Adrian Guggisberg, President of ABB Distribution Systems, highlighted the diverse landscape of global energy transitions. While electrification is a universal goal, paths and challenges vary significantly across regions.

“China leads the world in renewable energy development, setting an example for global energy transition,” Adrian noted. Europe is gradually advancing electrification under regulatory frameworks, while the U.S. faces distribution infrastructure constraints that limit rapid electrification. Despite these differences, all markets share a common challenge: as renewable energy connects at scale to distribution networks, traditional grid operations are no longer sufficient.

Adrian emphasized:
“Future distribution networks must evolve from passive receivers to intelligent systems. Without sufficient resilience and intelligence, integrating renewables could significantly increase systemic risks.”

He outlined four critical capabilities for future grids: infrastructure investment, load management, renewable energy integration, and support for rapidly growing data center demands.

Tackling Energy Transition: SF6-Free Technology and Intelligent Grid Integration

ABB addresses global energy challenges through equipment sustainability and system intelligence.

Sustainable Equipment: SF6-free technology is a core competitive advantage for ABB. Adrian recalled:
“Since 2013, ABB has deployed air-insulated SF6-free equipment, avoiding greenhouse gas emissions while tapping into a large replacement market.”

In China, SF6-free equipment has been widely implemented at 12kV, with gradual adoption at 24kV for critical infrastructure. The newly released Safe Air series directly responds to both regulatory policies and market demand.

Intelligent Grid Integration: China achieved its 2030 goal of 1.2 billion kW installed capacity for wind and solar, six years ahead of schedule, demonstrating “China speed” while posing significant grid integration challenges. ABB China’s distribution systems leader Luo Hui emphasized:
“ABB’s value lies in enhancing local renewable energy absorption through intelligent solutions, minimizing unnecessary grid disturbances.”

For example, the ZEE600 distribution automation solution in Xiamen builds AI models for generation and load forecasting. Coupled with energy storage as a “buffer,” it dynamically balances supply and demand, adjusting 5–20% of campus loads within one minute, supporting new “source-load interaction” distribution systems.

Reliability as a Foundation: Whether serving harsh renewable energy sites or critical data centers, ABB prioritizes equipment reliability. Both Adrian and Luo emphasized:
“Reliable quality is ABB’s first principle.”
This commitment extends throughout production, rigorous process standards, and the SF6-free product line, ensuring the green transition does not compromise safety or stability.

Deepening China Market Engagement: Localized Innovation and Dual Strategy

ABB demonstrates strong local commitment and a clear strategic approach in China.

Luo stated:
“We aim to be a model company ‘in China, for China’.”
ABB has established a robust local R&D team, with Chinese engineers contributing to overseas projects.

Adrian added:
“Previously, we designed products to international standards and adapted them for China. Now, we focus on products specifically designed for the Chinese market.”

The 12kV Safe Air product exemplifies this “China-specific” approach: easy to replace and plug-and-play, tailored for Chinese grid modernization. At the same time, ABB maintains an international product line for standardized global deployment. This dual strategy—China-specific and globally standardized—enables ABB to meet local needs while leveraging its global network.

In response to the fast-growing AI data center demand, ABB employs smart sensors and flexible distribution systems for rapid iteration, allowing early network deployment with later fine-tuning. For overseas markets, ABB offers standardized prefabricated modules to integrate complex distribution systems, simplifying installation and overcoming supply and deployment constraints.

From the 30th anniversary celebration to the launch of SF6-free products and senior executives’ insights on energy transition, ABB demonstrates foresight and execution as a global leader in electrification. As Adrian succinctly put it:
“ABB’s greatest strength is solving problems.”

In the journey toward a net-zero future, ABB’s China-focused innovation and green technology stand out as vital and strategic capabilities.
